gardening in the shade

gardening in the shade

Anyone have any suggestions of vegetables/other plants that grow well in partial shade? Not dark shade per se, but there's never any direct sunlight. This is our first year at our house and my first year gardening here, and we are lucky enough to have a fenced-in side yard in which I built 3 big garden boxes. The 3 trees there provide great shade for the house, and who can complain about an orange and a pomegranate tree, but everything I planted there this year (squash, pumpkins, tomatoes, carrots, beets, taters, beans, peas, corn, onions, and eggplants) are all growing incredibly slow, despite my diligent watering and fertilizing. Luckily NorCal has a long growing season, so maybe we'll have a late harvest. But next year I want to try growing more things that are more amenable to the lack of sunshine. Recommendations?
