I've been living in my apartment since august. Of course, the first few gas bills were really, really low. From September to October we paid 52$ and then we started using the heat and our bill went up to 133$. Since that happened, we put the thermostat on 60, with the room temperature always following just below that. Some days you can feel heat coming out of the heaters, but most of the time you can't feel anything. Since doing this, we have been using a space heater for when we sleep and just dressing in millions of layers. The apartment is VERY old. The ceilings are VERY high. The windows were recently replaced, and the landlord said we should have no trouble keeping heat in with them. I have a feeling this is why the previous tenants moved out. My gas bill, as of today is 200$. I know its going to cost more to heat an apartment just because it's getting colder, but 200$ ?! That seems outrageous to me. I'd like to call the Gas Company but I don't even have a clue where to start. This is my first time living without parents and I'm pretty much clueless. We have sheets covering nearly all of the windows and a thick blanket over the back door. We have towels under the door to stop drafts. I just don't understand how it could be 200 dollars now! We haven't touched the heat once!
Should I lower the heat from 60 to like 50? Will that make a difference? Will my pipes freeze?
Is this just going to keep getting worse because the place is ancient and the ceilings are insanely high?
what should I say to the gas company?
Any help is much appreciated. I CANNOT afford 200$ !! I don't even know what I'm going to do!
