Ghetto Fairy Tale Food

Ghetto Fairy Tale Food

I think most of us have heard this story when we were younger. My mom made this more often then not, which, now that I'm older, makes sense considering our financial situation at the time. The story of Stone Soup. In case you didn't know. Works reaaally well with a slow cooker. I cannot stress how great a slow cooker is when you're short on money. You can buys cheap vegetables, and have a great hearty healthy meal in no time. My recipe 1 Stone, washed clean, it is IMPERATIVE you have this! ;) 1 Slow cooker, or pot if you don't have one Whatever you can find. SERIOUSLY. A good soup base for me, chicken stock, veggie stock, if you don't have either, a teaspoon of soy sauce works WONDERS. I threw in some sea salt. Frozen vegetables work great in soups. They taste a hell of a lot better too, and you get a lot of nutrients out of them. I tosses in mixed cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, asparagus spears, onion, chestnuts (we had em, so I threw them in), and some leftover christmas turkey. Plus a clove of garlic, pinch of salt, and a whole ton of kasha (barley). It usually helps if you have some kind of grain to put it, whether its barley, oats, peas, beans, whatever. Makes it reaaally filling. Then I tossed in the stone, flipped a switch, and watched CSI for like, three hours. Afterwards, I had some damned good soup. Watch out for the stone btw. I'm serious, there have been times when I've forgotten its there :P This isn't so much a real RECIPE as an idea, and it usually brings up my spirits when I'm hungry, and depressed about money. Rocks are free. When all else fails, make some stone soup. :) Or casserole. I can usually whip up a random casserole with crap I find in my fridge. Hope that lightened someones day. :D
