I am new to this group, my name is Brandy.
I am newly engaged and plan on getting married in my backyard. My fiance and I bought our house almost 2 years ago and the front and back yards are in serious need of some TLC. We are remodling our back deck and patio areas, and putting down stones around our beds that have been poorly maintained.
I have never owned a home before so I have never had the oppurtunity to plant anything in the ground until now. My frontyard faces east and my backyard west. I have huge trees in my backyard that shade my beds, but they are shading it from afternoon sun. At any rate I have put a variety of plants in one of beds kind of as a test to see what does the best. Here is a picture.

I put expanded shale rocks because I have black clay dirt. Also put some soil in and composte. The trick is that I have full sun plants and shade plants, we shall see how it goes. I still have another bed I have to do, that is more shaded than this one. I want to do some veggies, but still need to research that, and till somemore pull old weeds etc….add shale and soil….
