Gooseberries

I have a bush which my mother and I have identified as a gooseberry, but I have never eaten gooseberries and know nothing about them.

Now, some of the berries are turning red and fall off in my hand to the touch. Does this mean they are ripe? Overripe? Can one eat them straight, or do they have too be prepared in jam or pie filling?
