Growing Grapes in Zone 5 (Nebraska)
So I've been vegetable gardening and I love that a lot and I really love all the great produce I bring in. This year we're even going to begin canning so that we can enjoy the bounty all winter long (and not end up with a lot of harvest at the end of the fall that we can't eat fast enough) However, fruit has been seriously missing from our garden. We have a huge backyard and we don't use it all for the vegetables. This year I'm looking at getting two dwarf apple trees and beginning them espalier style at the bottom of our yard. However...I'd really love to grow some grapes. My question is, I have found precious little help in growing grapes in Zone 5, Omaha, Nebraska. Last year I remember coming across a site that talked about it, and encouraged growers to grow in containers and for extra heat, grow them against the house. I can't remember what the site was or where I found it. I've also talked to someone who's mom grows grapes here, but her mom can't remember where she got her grapes originally and didn't really offer much helpful advice. So I come to you. Does anyone know of or can recommend a supplier that I can get a few vine plants from that do well in this area and does anyone have any advice for growing them? I think that I will be growing them in containers, maybe, unless someone has better advice, and I have a very very sunny spot picked out in my yard that gets like 10-12 hours of sunlight (it is the sunniest spot in the yard starting right in the morning and going into the late afternoon) I'd appreciate any advice and assistance that you can give me. I know that grapes do grow here as the University of Nebraska Lincoln has done a few articles about some vineyards growing around nebraska, but as for backyard gardeners I've found very little. Thanks!!!
