hardpan and rocky soil
ive got hardpan/caliche in my front yard where there were some privots. it was incredibly shallow (in some spots less than 6 inches - in fact it made digging these huge established privots out really easy because the roots all grew horizontally just below the surface). im finding pockets of sand stone/ sand and limestone and fossilised shells. im breaking it up because i want to plant a tree and other deep rooted plants but all the digging is producing a lot of rock. (the soil in this part of texas is crazy. this is just up front. in my backyard you can slip your hands in to your elbows with no effort.) how rock-free does my soil have to be? im picking out the stuff bigger than a golfball and will be supplementing with horse manure and other compost over the winter. or do i need to do a complete replace?
