I harvested my 12 square foot (4 meter) garlic patch today. The yield at a little over 10 pounds (4.5 kgs.) wasn’t bad, but I have to admit I was a little disappointed. Most of the heads were smaller than the parent heads. I planted store bought cloves on 5 inch centers, last Fall, in what I thought was a patch that I had heavily amended. I say that because when I dug them up, the ground was hard, sunbaked clay, with out a single worm. So the big question is, what should I do to get bigger heads next year? Should I add sand to the bed? More compost? Any varieties anyone would recommend?
