Hello

Hello

Hello! I just joined the community today, and I've very much looking forward to getting tips, ideas and advice. I'm not a seasoned gardener at all, but my mother is a botanist, so I've grown up around lovely plants and gardens my whole life. Now that I'm an adult, I think I'd like to get into gardening as well. I live in Michigan, where we've had a hellish winter. Yesterday it snowed, and today it hovered around 40 degrees. That being said, the flowers in a little flowerbed on the side of the house have bloomed. My fiance and I moved just moved into this house in January, so I was curious to see if there would be any flowers in the various flowerbeds, and I was delighted to see the daffodils and little purple flowers bloom. The tulips are not blooming yet, but I think they will soon. I'd like to get some containers to put on my front steps. Can anyone recommend some good, sturdy flowers? I'm really excited, but I don't know what types are good for containers. I'm looking for both flowers, and general green foliage. The area that it will be in faces northwest (or so my fiance says). I believe it gets some sunlight, but I honestly haven't noticed. We have a lot of nasty ivy growing in the front yard, which I know needs virtually no light. I'm thinking about pulling it all up this spring, but it would be a huge undertaking, so I don't know. Anyway, any recommendations would be nice. Thanks!
