I just joined this community after watching it for awhile, and I thought I might introduce myself. Gardening is something I have always enjoyed, but until recently never considered one of my main pastimes or hobbies. Growing up I helped my dad grow vegetables in our backyard garden, which was great, but now that I'm out on my own in an apartment I am for the most part limited to indoor plants. I have several peace lilies, a cactus, some succulents, and a spider plant. My main interest, however, is my herb garden, which includes mint, basil, cilantro, chives, parsley, camomile, and oregano. After purchasing a book on ferns, I would love to try caring for some, but they seem quite delicate so I am hesitant. A friend of mine has a large deck-like space on the roof over a garage and knows little about plants, and so I've been *very enthusiastically* coaxing him to let me help him start a rooftop garden. Partially, my motivation for this is that I want cherry tomatoes, but also he is a nuturing type and I think once he gets into gardening he would be great at it. Any suggestions that might work well for him? He has a nice big space with lots of direct sunlight and not much experience. I would tell you which zone I am in, but...I'm not sure. I live in southeast Nebraska. I'm so pleased to meet all of you! This community is really wonderful.
