Has this ever happened to anyone else? The cleaner hasn't arrived yet, and I'll ask his advice when he comes, but I really don't want to lose a chunk of my security deposit like this (or all of it, if the landlord decides the carpet needs to be replaced). We've had the shelf for many years without a problem, but all the other places we've lived in have had laminate flooring -- this is the first time we've had it on carpet.
Mostly, I'd like to know if anyone has any suggestions to prevent this from happening again. It's a really nice piece of furniture, and I don't want to get rid of it if there's a way I can modify the legs or put something under it without having it be really noticeable.
UPDATE: The carpet cleaner has come and gone, and while the rest of our rug looks great, the rings in the corner remain. He thinks there was varnish on the ladder, and that the humidity in the air caused it to transfer from the wood to the carpet. I definitely won't be putting any other wood furniture down on the rug unless I've covered the bottom so this doesn't happen again, but he didn't have any suggestions on what to do about the stains. Google recommends amyl acetate, but I'm hesitant to do anything just in case I might somehow make it worse. Are there other options available like hiring someone to cut out the damaged section of carpet and replace it with something that isn't?
