Help! Who/What is the culprit?

I woke up today and saw this sight at my storeroom door. A patch of paint and wooden door bits got scratched out!

We really wondering what on earth could have caused this overnight? It was perfectly fine yesterday. We live on the 2nd level, and this door faces a balcony. Could it have been some sort of bird or animal? How could we stop this from happening again? I can’t imagine my whole door being scratched out :( It is very puzzling.
