I'm Lisa B-K. Cool idea for a community. Thanks for starting it! I'm "old" compared to some of the people here.. I'm 35 and my husband and I have two kids. We live on one quite small income -- his (he works for an indie record label) -- and have done so for the last 5 1/2 years. I left my job because we wanted to raise our kids at home and in the world, free of institutions... but that's a whole 'nother story. Anyway, I cook and bake and garden on the cheap. I totally groove on it, plus it's healthy and relaxing and is teaching my kids some self-sufficiency, which I think will be crucial in the coming years. I really enjoy living pretty flexibly and free of a lot of the bullsh*t. That said, the heavy price of health/dental care (my 11 YO will need braces and it's freaking me out... but we'll do it!) and paying for some leftover bad financial decisions kind of keeps us living light. Home ownership would be swell, but due to our low income and lack of savings, we can't get a good-sized loan; we've been priced right out of the market in our area. We're figuring stuff out, little by little. Like most of what we've achieved (and we've achieved a lot!), it's always by some stroke of luck combined with hard work. We've been renting the same house for 6 years and are in a really good situation with that. More stuff about life and how we live it here... I'll shut up now and read more intros!
