High-tech solutions for low-tech problems

Hi, all. I really would like to have a massive backyard garden, full of goodies for me to eat. There are a couple of problems, though. First off, I live in a second story apartment, so the most I could do is container gardening, but my second problem is that I can't keep anything alive. Except for my jade plant, but that's only because I can leave it alone and on my balcony. So I have turned to my confidant, my friend, my computer. I own a couple of different ValuSoft CD-ROM programs, one is a home building/decorating program, and the one that I just installed yesterday is a gardening program.(!!!) It has like, 4,000 different varieties of plant life to choose from when creating your virtual garden, and it also has all of the "stuff" you'd need around, too. Garden sheds, green houses, and even raised beds. You can even put down your zip code and it will tell you which zone you're in, and the plants that will live in your zone. I was tinkering around with it last night, to create my "dream" backyard, and I put in a bunch of raised beds, thinking that they were the best way to go, they seemed a lot tidier and the rows and columns of them evenly spaced looked good to my perfectionist mind. But I'm wondering now, if there are some plants that should just be planted in the ground? On either extreme end, I know that herbs would be okay, whereas pumpkins would not, but I'm not clear on the middle ground. Artichokes? Beans? I suppose it would depend on how large the bed was, so for our purposes, let's say that they are 3 feet high. But yeah. This program totally r0xx0rz my s0xx0rz. It is called Custom 3D Land, if anyone would like to look for it. I got it in a multi-pack, along with the Custom 3D Home, Master Cook CD ROM and one other one that I forgot about, at Target for like, 10 bucks. Fantastic. **Edit** I am in zone 6, as I learned last night! :)
