We have dropped our heating bills significantly with this simple idea: Turn the heat down in the day and up at night. During the day my preschool-aged kids and I go around in socks and put blankets over our laps when we sit. If we want to warm up, we drink soup. At night, the house is as warm as a hotel. This is the opposite of the advice you generally see in articles about saving money, but it has saved us a lot because the heat is only on for nine hours out of 24. I think that we're also healthier because we have the heat up just at the time when our body temperatures naturally drop. I know that I get fewer sinus headaches now. It's also very good for morale to wake up in a warm house even if the heat is going off in 15 minutes.
