How do I receive my 1099 form?
This is going to be a little complicated, so please bear with me. I worked last winter for a friend of mine. We agreed that I would be paid by personal check, and since I wouldn't be making more than $2000 over the six months I'd work for him, didn't want to worry about filling out a W2 (he owns a boat, and we took passengers out for charter. Just he, myself and two other crew.) Problem comes when money is involved. He had an investor in the company, who several months into my contract, decided us employees were to fill out 1099 forms. Now, after a long legal battle where the investor tried to claim total ownership of the boat and ignore all the payments my friend had made, the investor is in jail for fraud (over not just my friend's boat, but many other financial crimes) and not on speaking terms with my friend or any of us, and my friend owns the boat in full. My friend has no idea what I should do about the 1099 form. I no longer live at the same address I provided then, and we have no contact for the investor. Where do I go from here? Taxes were not taken out of our wages, and although they wouldn't be much, I don't want to be liable for anything. But it's such a messy battle that I don't know how or where to find information. If it helps any, I made less than $4000 in 2008.
