how does one keep basil alive?
ok, after attempting to start from seed twice, and plants also twice, i really would like to know whether i've just had a string of incredibly bad luck or if i'm missing some key element to growing and maintaining basil in a zone 9b climate. the thing is, i don't apparently learn and i wanted to try again. so anyone have any tips? details: we have clay soil, hot dry summers, and very rainy winters. i've been mixing compost with the soil and watering deeply twice a week. my mint is thriving right next to the "basil graveyard." said spot is in full sun. i've replanted in the same spot every time. i've tried maintaining a small potted basil inside, but it died, probably from lack of sun. the second potted basil i put in the window and it wilted within a few days; i planted it outside and it never recovered. the seeds, planted twice, never came up. not even a sprout. at this point when people say basil is easy to grow i sort of want to strangle them. any insight into making my next attempt winning?
