How I love talking about my perennials on the hill and slope

I have been weeding a bit with Oma Lily. We have been pulling out the sparce grass and the tall stuff from the crown vetch which is in gorgeous purple bloom along with the orange and red gaillardias and the deep purple alfala on the hill.

I love it up there. I am weeding my thyme pathways as usual. The flowers all wqaint to grow in the thyme, but no no, not my thyme which I have worked at growing for several years.

I wonder how long ago I levelled the hilltop so I could put two pairs of chairs up there to look over the yard and the valley and the forest and ridge. Several years, I guess.

I didn’t do that until I had planted perennials all over the slope and had run out of area on that hillside. It was lawn when we moved here. I didn’t want to mow it, so I dug holes in it and planted perennials, then put more beside them and then more and more until all that was left was pathways between. That’s when I dug up the grass and planted thyme for the pathways, too.

But as that was lawn grass, it came back.

I moved on to the hillside above the lane, beginning with terracing the cliff and ;planting dry loving plants, then pulled out grass and dug holes and put in dayilies, and gtrees and all sorts of things as they bloomed. I love moving plants when they are blooming so I can see what they will be looking like!

I also started by planting thyme all over the top levelled areas and then down the hill in two places to the lane and to the yard.

Since then there have been more pathways, one that crosses and connects the two and another way down. That’s the one I just made last week. I haver also added thyme to go up into the lilacs where the hammock is now surrounded by them and called Lilac Cove.
