Last month, I planted a variety of perennials, including some Shasta Daisies, a Black Eyed Susan, Purple Coneflower, and Phlox among a green pepper plant and cherry tomato plant. I noticed one of my daisies was starting to lose petals. I couldn’t figure out why. Finally, today, when I was showing my mother in law my little plot o’ plants, I saw it: SLUG SLIME!
I went on the defensive and put several little cups of beer in various parts of my garden. I also threw some coffee grounds down since my mom said slugs hate coffee. Someone else told me hair, aluminum foil or egg shells. I just stuck with the beer and coffee grounds for tonight.
About ten minutes ago, I decided to see if I got any.
Ok, ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww! I hate bugs with a passion and when I saw lines of slugs sliding along the ground, I was immediately sickened. The slugs were writhing around in the cups and others were falling into it. I threw some salt on some others and figured I’d check tomorrow and put in some new beer cups because I was so grossed out. These are also huge, one inch long slugs that are really much more disgusting than the smaller, brownish-greyish ones.
So, with all of that aside, what is the best way to get rid of slugs? Am I doomed to spending an entire summer of filling up little cups of beer in the evening and dumping them out during the day?
