id type of jasmine? and book recommendation?

Hi! I hope someone here can help me with identifying these two types of jasmine (or whatever these are, not sure). My parents have both, but they like one and don’t recommend the other, so I want to make sure I know which is which.

This is the one they say is good, because it stays green and doesn’t go brown/dead later and doesn’t smell as strong:

And this is the kind they say flowers sooner, smells stronger, but goes brown and dead too quickly and kills other plants around it:

Basically I’ve been looking for a pretty, climbing vine for some privacy on my balcony (so in a container), and I think some kind of jasmine and/or clematis might work for me. I don’t want something too invasive (and climbing into the neighbor’s windows).

Also, I would be grateful for recommendations for a good book or two on houseplants and container/balcony/patio gardening. I think I live in zone 9. Thank you!
