In default on student loans. Tips on consolidating?
Hi everyone. I am up to my eyeballs in debt. I left school due to illness and started working at a large company, about six months later I was placed on disability and my position was eliminated. I live on about $800 a month, if that, and after I pay my rent, pay for some benefits through COBRA, and pay my car loan, I have basically nothing left. I have outstanding student loans (Perkins and another Government loan) which I was making payments on while I was working, but now they are in default. I plan on consolidating them and hopefully returning to school (if I am a full-time student I qualify for more insurance benefits through my parents than I currently have.) I know I can't get federal funding for school if I'm in default on my loans. If I consolidate and make the income-dependent monthly payment will that be enough to make me eligible again? I looked at the memories and the ed.gov websites, started the loan process, and plan on going to my old college on Monday to find out what I can, but anyone else's experiences might help me. EDIT: I have put the Federal Subsidized loan in forbearance (at least it's showing as such on the status page), and I plan on going down to my college Monday to figure out how to do that with my Perkins loan. Whoo!
