In search of evergreen hedge

I'm looking for a fast growing, evergreen hedge-type bush that I can find & plant this spring. Preferably inexpensively since the hedge we need to create is going to be rather long. In the winter it will receive full sun, in the summer half of it will get partial sun and the other half full sun. I'd like something growing into the 4-6 ft range. I'd like to stay away from holly and prickly-type things since this will be in the backyard and near an active area. I'm near the coast of NC, zone 7 or 8 depending on what map you use. Anyone have any suggestions or favorites to share???
