Keeping Track of Money

Keeping Track of Money

This might sound like a no-brainer to the realm of poor skills, but sometimes it seems rather challenging, at least in my opinion. We live in a different world than the one of 10 years ago where people wrote checks for everything, recorded them immediately, and then balanced their checkbook every week. Hardly anyone even uses cash anymore, so it really can be like those stupid commercials where the people are flowing smoothly through a store and swiping their cards and leaving... until someone has cash and halts the whole thing. I feel like that now if I even attempt to pay for anything with cash in a store. And while using my debit card, I definitely don't feel like the glaring throng behind me would like to wait for me to start recording things in a book while I'm standing there. So my question is, how do you all keep track of your money that you spend? Obviously spending as little as possible for the things you buy is the main poor skill, but I've got that pretty much down pat after having been poor for as long as I have. :P I just sometimes have the issue of checking my balance online after a few days and thinking "Where did all the money go?" Does that happen to anyone else? :) What systems have you all devised to help with this? I need something as low maintenance and non-time-consuming as possible. I just feel like there must be something more organized than just counting on frugality. And I've been doing alright, but I could be doing better. That would be a really good poor skill. (Oh, also, my apologies if this has been posted about before. I checked the "organization" and "personal finance" tags, and saw nothing like this. I couldn't imagine what other tag would fit.)
