Landlords, mice droppings, and cats- Oh my!

So, a month ago I found an apartment in the same building as my sister's, I am on the third floor though she is on main/basement. Although the place was unoccupied since August of last year, I could not have it until now since it needed "work done". I agreed and was on my merry way. I paid yesterday and finally got the keys.

However, I am told that when they steam cleaned the carpets, the person lost control of the machine and it put a dent into the wall of the bedroom, and I told her as long as I didn't get in trouble for it and it gets fixed, I was fine with it. And indeed, when I viewed the apartment there is a large hole in the bedroom wall over by the light switch. I was also told that the stove did not work and I would be getting a new one. She would be calling the electritian Monday (its the original one that attatches to the wall, they would have to be clipped and a plug in or something installed).

It wasn't until late, about 8PM last night, that I finally got to view the suite since January, and I was disappointed. Besides the steam cleaned carpets, NOTHING was done! The walls were filthy and as were the non-carpeted floors. The appliances (Stove and Fridge), the counters and cabinets, windows, and tub were not clean either. But I was willing to start to clean so at least something was clean for the move tomorrow. I started with the fridge, since I can then turn it on and have it ready for tomorrow and I find mice urine and feces in it! I pull it back and sure enough there is a mouse nest in the back! They had even chewed up the styrofoam in the back and climbed up the mental coils on the back and chewed up the GE safety label on the back to make the nest... Frustrated, I left and called the landlord who said she would view it tomorrow.

I told my Grandpa and my Aunt about the fridge and they didn't believe me. Its not until I have everything loaded and are partially finished the move that my Aunt went and looked and sure enough, there IS mice droppings and a nest under the fridge! She looks further and finds dropping and urine thoughout the apartment along the radiators, pipes, wall edgings and in cuboards and vanity as well. When taking pictures, I also removed a the coil part of the burner and looked underneath and sure enough it is FILLED with charred food remains, bits of food, I think fat, feces and urine...I am pretty much livid and don't feel comfortable about it at all! I call my landlord who tries to re-assure me that they don't have a mice problem and that it must have been old. Whether or not it was new mice droppings and urine is besides the point! She said I should take care of it myself since she cannot come view it because she has to collect money from tenants who forgot to pay on Friday and the other landlady had to deal with a plummer because there was a problem elsewhere... Her suggestion was getting sonic pulse things, but don't they effect cats? She said she was assured (by whom, I don't know...) that they don't. I later found out that the other landlady (who had to deal with the plummer) also left me a message basically telling me that it was NOT possible that a mouse problem existed... And that they had cleaners in there who although they don't do the appliances, so it was clean... My family, camera pictures and myself would not agree with this BS...

So, in short, things are not going well with my new apartment and landlady(/ies). I am currently staying in my sister's place right now and I am NOT amused with the whole situation. I worry greatly for my health and for my stuff still in the apartment. I don't know how you tell if the mice droppings and urine is fresh, but whether or not is besides the point, its unhealthy to have that crap there! I am really frustrated right now with everything! But more importantly, I feel cheated by my landlords and I want things fixed NOW.

The reason I moved here was because it was cheaper than my current situation. I have not the time nor the money to move but I cannot live there with its current conditions... I am not sure what to do or how to go about it... I was hoping someone could help me fix my current conditions... Anything I can say or do to get things going?

there current rebuttle is that pretty much no one else has problems with mice, mine is the only one, and there is no food in the apartment to support them. However, my apartment has be vacant since August and all others have been occupied and she allows cats, so mice shouldn't be an issue... But from what I can tell, they come in through the holes where the pipes are... and that's all I know...

I have cats (also staying with my sister) and I am going to be "renting" a rat from my mother to which I think will help convince any mice that live there to vacate. But what do I have to do with the rat? Is it just the matter it being there for it to be effective? And what do I do with the mice urine and droppings? I have bleach, but I am not allowed to use it because "it might ruin the carpets"... And I don't feel comfortable letting my cats and a rat in there until the droppings are cleaned because it can most likely make them sick as much as it could possibly me... Plus, I need that stove and fridge gone. The mice have chewed up the styrofoam in the back of the fridge and just crawled all over it, I do not see it as safe nor sanitary to use it (even if cleaned, I doubt they could clean it in all its entirity...), but I doubt my landlord will get me a "new" one (I figure it will be a new-to-me one... not really new, hence the "" around new) and I have to somehow convince this as an urgency. This is only my second apartment and I most certianly do not know what I am doing or how to go about doing anything...
