Lava rocks?

Lava rocks?

So we moved into our house last year and we bought it from an elderly couple who didn't have a lot of ability to do much with their flower beds. Do aid them with the maintenance of their beds they put black lava rocks EVERYWHERE. Cue in me, who likes to do outdoorsy work and has a penchant for gardening. It is really hard to plant anything with those rocks. You have to move the rocks aside, but wear gloves because their sharp. But if you're planting something large, don't use your hands too much because it'll take forever. But you can't use a hand shovel either because the rocks are so sharp they scratch and you worry they might chip your shovel. Not to mention there's some lining (either cloth or plastic) underneath them that you have to cut to plant. Really really aggravating. We've slowly been removing the rocks and replacing them with plan wood chip mulch. But, is there any way to speed up the removal of these rocks? I've been using a shovel/dirt rake and my hands. It's slow going. Any suggestions? Conversely, anyone want some lava rocks? I'll help you load them -- just take them away! :)
