making yogurt

making yogurt

okay--i need your expertise. i'm tired of buying yogurt (weirdly expensive, even in the big generic tubs) when milk is routinely $2 a gallon. how can i make yogurt? i have heard of using a bit of pre-purchased stuff for the culture, boiling milk, and using the pilot light in the gas stove to culture it but (to my constant mourning) i have an electric stove. and my kitchen is closet-sized, leaving no room for a thrifted yogurt-maker. can i just boil the milk, add the starter and wrap it in a sweater or something? the other thing is that i want it to be relatively thick and made with lowfat milk. can my dream be a reality?
