maple tree mold?

maple tree mold?

hi folks! i'm new to gardening, and have recently become the keeper of a maple tree, growing in front of our house. the leaves have recently become covered in white spots, which seem to wipe off the leaves... could this be some sort of mold or fungus? is it very bad? any ideas how to get rid of it? i noticed the same thing on a maple down the street. don't want to neighbours to think we're bad gardeners already! thanks for all input!
