well, i finally found out what it is. i was looking through my seed savers exchange catalog and saw them offereing seeds for something called a mexican sour gherkin. that’s what my vine with the yellow flowers and weird berry/cucumber things was. they are edible after all. more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melothria_scabra
