Hello! Zone 8b, here. I have a potted Meyer Lemon tree that’s about 2 feet tall (not including the pot). Early this spring (I’ve only had it since then) it would flower, produce little pea-sized fruits, then they would yellow and drop off. I figured it was because it was still a little too cool for the tree to actually fruit. Then a few weeks ago it flowered again (and omg the blossoms smell delicious) and most of these actually stuck. I went outside and counted 21 fruits, each about the size of a ping pong ball – and this was AFTER I’d picked off fruits so there was only one at the end of each branch.
Since it’s still pretty young, should I pick most of the fruit off (or even all of it)? I think 21 full lemons may be a bit much for the little guy to carry without breaking, but would it be okay to leave a few? Am I too late since they’re already the size of ping pong balls? I’ve been picking off any new fruit that pops up, but it’s not really been necessary as they’ve been yellowing and dropping off on their own while they’re still pea-sized.
