Mice!! EEEK!

Yesterday I discovered that we have had some unwelcome boarders in our kitchen...mice. I emptied the cabinets, scrubbed them and used bleach spray to disinfect, but now I need to make sure they don't come back. I don't want to call an exterminator (way too expensive) or use poison myself -- either way the mice might go off and die somewhere that we cannot get to and that smell is not one I want in my house. A woman at work said that mice don't like moth balls, but do I want my pots and pans smelling like moth ball? I also read that peppermint oil is a repellent. Anyone have any ideas on how to encourage the mice to leave? If we have to get traps we will, I would rather not, but more so I would rather not have mice. Anyone know any good traps that aren't the classic spring ones or the glue tape stuff that aren't too expensive? Thanks! UPDATE: Thank you everyone for your advice!
