I'm starting to think about my future move and wondering how this stuff works. I've never been in a situation like this before. In a nutshell, I'm going to be downsizing. We want to relocate to a new town and rent a small apartment there while building a new home. This will involve moving three people from 2 three bedroom homes into a two bedroom apartment plus a local storage unit. (I'm not even going to start thinking about what this will involve for the pets yet!) How do we do this? I know that I can hire a moving company to pack all of our stuff up and move it to our new location, but is it possible to ask them to pack the stuff that will be stored separately and for them to deposit it in the storage unit we'll be renting? Do places do that sort of thing? Or would I need to repack the things we'll be storing and transport it to a storage unit on my own? I've looked into the idea of PODS, but it seems like the cost for a long distance move is on par with what I'd pay a moving company to actually pack/unpack me! When we moved with the military, we were able to have two shipments. One of stuff we'd need immediately, and one with the longer term unnecessary stuff. It seems like something like that would be ideal. One shipment to the new apartment, one shipment to a storage facility in our new city. But I'm sure that would make the cost of the move psychotic. It seems really confusing. Any suggestions? Experience to share? Thanks!
