Mulch and Potatoes and bonehead moves

Mulch and Potatoes and bonehead moves

In the fall as the potato vines died back at covered them with about a foot of leaves to keep the ground from freezing, so I could harvest them all winter. Of course as I looked at this pile of dry leaves, held down with some of my bean poles, I had a great bonehead idea. Gee if I run them through the mower, they might partially decompose (same idea that works wonderfully in the compost pile.) Fortunately as an experiment I only did this with part of the leaf mulch. When I went out this morning to get some potatoes, I discovered why this wasn't a good idea. The ground under the still relatively dry whole leaves, was not frozen, and was itself faily dry and easy to dig. The ground leaves were wet matted down and the ground under them was wet and frozen about three inches. Fortunately its been a mild winter and the potatoes themselves were not touched by the frost. x posted
