My first garden.

My first garden.

It took me a little while to figure out how to group all my pictures together and no flood people's friends pages. But thanks to the people that send me links and helped me figure it out. I am new to this community. I have had livejournal now for several months and just recently decided to venture out to the community world. I am looking forward to sharing my pictures plus seeing everyone elses pictures. I am a beginner at the gardening thing. I have made several flower beds this year and planted a varity of flowers and bulbs. I am going to watch them close and see which really work for me and my area. I live in Montana. It gets very cold here in the winter with lots of snow. Summers, eventhough they are short, can be very hot and dry. In the past I have planted a few plants but failed them miserably. I neglected giving them proper care because of being to "busy" with summer activity. (I didn't water them enough) And ended up with dried out dead plants. This year I am tring harder to be more active and involved with my plants and flowers. It started last year with a tree root. :)
I have a cotton wood tree in my back yard with very raised, showing roots. I got tired of tripping and tring to mow over them and decided to make a rock garden over the top of them. I used round river rocks for the border and placed plastic paper stuff. I planted 3 little bushes too. Then I used tree bark mulch to cover the plastic. I have been looking for drift wood to place inside along with some larger rocks. I am quite proud of my creation. I was worried this winter with all the snow that the bushes would not survive the cold. I was very happy this spring to see that the did survive and little leaves were budding all over them. The have doubled in size since June '06. I have added a few things to the garden and plan to build up the rock wall a little bit more. Here are some pictures....

My finished project.

Another view.

These are the flowers I planted this year. Last year they were red, white, and blue (very patriotic). Those were not yet out this year when I bought the pink and purple ones.

The next 3 photos are from this year. You can see how big the bushes have gotten. Also between the wine barrels I made 2 new floer gardens. I planted Yellow Columbines, Bleeding Hearts, Irises, and tulip and daffodil bulbs. It is hard to see it in those pictures due to all the cotton that has fallen all over from the cotton wood tree. I am allergic to the cotton so I can not spend to much time outside around it. I hate it when it falls everywhere. It covers everything. This year has been the worst so far for all the cotton. I have more pictures of it in my journal.

A ceramic kitty sleeps in a pile of white fluff. If I was to gather all the cotton I could use it to stuff tons of pillows....If only I wasn't allergic!!

So there was my first garden. I will take more pictures of it when it looks better and isn't so full of cotton. Plus I will add pictures of my newest flower bed I put in this year. It is not as fancy as some other peoples gardens but I am pround of the work I put into it. Some flowers are doing great while others are not. But hey, it's trial and error. Maybe someday I can be a great flower gardener.
Anyways I am always open to tips and suggestions. I learn as I go. I just don't want any hateful critisism please. Be nice!!
