My first try at seed starting a mitigated disaster.

My first try at seed starting a mitigated disaster.

Too impatient I was. Next year I’ll know better. The very first tray I started waaaaaay back in February was a Burpee’s starter tray. The only thing I should have been starting were peppers and the spinach but I threw everything in it just to see.

Predictably the tomatoes and beans grew too large for the tiny starter cells. I pulled them and restarted the tomatoes. Then, far too early in this cold, cold spring, I put the peppers, spinach and an early columbine outside. And then I put the decimated Burpee tray in the window and promptly forgot about it.

This is what the tray looks like today:

Apparently the water mat was wet enough to water the cells for a month and there was enough morning sun to nourish the seeds that remained. The greenery is– beefsteak tomatoes, columbines, sunflowers and gazanias.

Would it be worth it to put these guys on the porch to try to harden them off?
