We bought a house a couple of months ago, here in Oakland, CA, and the yard needs a lot of work, but it already has quite a few plants that are worth keeping. Unfortunately they are drowning in grass that spreads everywhere, and I am fighting an on-going war with something that I am told is Morning Glory (incredibly invasive vine with beautiful purple trumpet flowers), and there seem to be several populations of ants fighting for supremacy. Also, it's hot and dry as hell here right now. Question 1. There are several nice rose bushes, and I started to try to clear some of the grass and debris from under them, then I found some pots with labels that indicated a previous resident had actually planted tall grasses amongst the roses. As far as I've understood so far roses should be kept fairly clear of clutter at the base, so as to reduce the possibility of disease and pests. Have I got that right, or is it ok to have grass and stuff growing through my roses? How would I find and cut out suckers? Question 2. We have this really nice Lily in our back yard, does anyone know what it is? P7080652 P7080653
