mystery tomato and fennel pollen

mystery tomato and fennel pollen

Apologies for the lack of photos, but I’m separated from my computer today.

Last summer I went to the farmers’ market and bought a basket of assorted heirloom tomatoes. I saved seeds from the ones I liked and planted them this year, learning in the process that one of them was probably not an heirloom.

Some of the seeds were from a small, translucent yellow tomato. But the fruit of that plant came out yellowish orange, with faint pink stripes and the skin texture of an apricot! I’ve never seen a tomato like this. It tastes good – mild, sweet and not too acidic. Has anyone ever grown something like this? Is it an existing variety? I want to save the seeds and see if it makes the same fruit next year – what are the chances it would work?

Also, I have a lot of fennel plants blooming in my garden and am not eager to spend the whole spring weeding fennel shoots out of my yard again. Has anyone ever saved fennel pollen to use in cooking? If so, how did you do it?
