New and needing advice

Hello everyone! I am new here, this is my first post, and I am finding that I am not terribly adept at gardening. I live in the California desert, zone 11, and am desperately trying to find things to plant that will stay alive and beautiful. My front yard is populated with a lot of rosebushes from a previous tenant and they seem to love it here with little to no help, except for deadheading, so I am keeping them in the front. Here is a picture of my back garden (before quite a bit of it died)

The ugly fencing keep my puppies out of the dirt. The salvia, mexican heather, and the purple button mums all died, but all the larger plants in the rear are still ok. So basically I have a large empty spot in the front running from one side to the other. Aside from planing more verbena or iceplant, do you have any suggestions? I just bought a flat of gazania yesterday. We will be moving in 2 years and they will tear our house down after that, so long term planning isn’t really a necessity.

Thank you all so much!
