New gardener, nightmare garden – help!

New gardener, nightmare garden – help!

I recently moved to Reading (UK) to my boyfriend’s house. He has a garden. There’s a tiny patch of grass at the front – that’s easy to deal with. At the back, there’s a garden 4 metres wide by 24 metres long, or thereabouts. Slightly past the midpoint is a low fence acrodd the width of the garden, with a gate at one side. It’s a nightmare of weeds, convolvulus and, in spring, goosegrass (which gives me a rash). Beyond the fence is a pile of rusting junk from the previous owner. There are nasty concrete stepping stones in a straight line down one side of the garden, hidden under the weeds, and at the far end (near a nice old red-brick wall) is what used to be conrete standing for a shed – no longer usable.

I have ideas for things to do with it, but I hardly know where to start. My mother gave me some narcissi bulbs last weekend, but they’re going out front, because they’d just get lost in the back!

Apart from hiring a garden clearance firm, which I’ll do when I have enough money, what can I do with this nightmare of a garden? Any ideas most welcome.

Thanks!
