Newbie!

I'm a newbie to the group, and still a novice gardener. I've read through a lot of the posts on here, and I'm loving the energy and information on this site. SO with that said... I have an icky problem. A few days ago, I was repotting an aloe plant, and while mushing around in the soil a roach crawled out of the dirt and on to my hand. After a considerable amount of jumping around and making squeally "eww" noises and stomping around, I collected myself. We have pest controll, and our house doesn't have roaches, but my plants with their dark, damp soil seems to be an attraction. How do I discourage them from making themselves at home without hurting the plant?
