Two weeks ago my mom went grocery shopping, picked up some produce, the usual. Well about two days later the purple skinned onion she had baught had some pretty distinct sprouts shooting out the crown! As if they poked out and grew about an inch literally over night! Not knowing really what to make of it, she didn't use it, and just let it sit on top of the microwave. The stalks have been growing and growing, and the onion bulb started to shrivel a ltitle, so yesterday I just couldn't take it anymore and set it on top of a cup filled with water, so only the root area was wet (kind of like what you do to sprout half of a potatoe). Is this something I could put out in my garden as soon as it thaws and gets warm enough out? Is there any harm or reason I really should NOT do that? It sure seems rather satisfied with itself, and I would hate to toss it just because it decided to be prolific.
