Our big garden project

Our big garden project

Using www.growveg.com to make the design, I'm creating 9 eight by four foot raised beds. They will be within a 54 by 20 foot garden... eventually to be fenced in against groundhog and rabbit and deer... Hopefully they won't get to it before I get the fence done.

Part of the work already done was the clearing of perenials and bushes to make way for orderly building of orderly raised beds! Yay!!! I transplanted two 18 inch boxwoods to my front yard. 2 lilacs (one 6 foot and one 8 foot) were donated to FreeCycle and dug by the lovely Cynthia and Ed. The big one was subdivided into 3 bushes. Big bunches of garlic chives were dug and laid to wait in the shade (plus some to Cyn/Ed).

This is a rough plan of the layout. The shed is immediately to the left and will form part of the bottom 20 foot edge. The terrain basically goes uphill from the shed toward the right. The beds are all 8x4 and built of 2x6 timbers. The bed in the upper right corner is #1, lower right is #2. I plan to set up a crop rotation through the 9 beds. The areas in gray are perennial plants like strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, rhubarb and herbs.
Larry and Meghan are building the raised beds. The design is from the Pioneer Woman's blog. This is bed #1. The design calls for leveling the beds. This leaves big holes on the downhill side. I am filling them in with some of the MANY rocks that I have dug from this very site over the years.
This is bed #1 and is mostly planted. Radishes to be added tomorrow. It will need a support trellis for the sugar snaps.
This is bed #2 and it is built and filled but not yet planted...that is planned for tomorrow and will also need some support for the fava beans eventually.
This is between bed 1 and 2 and is not a permanent raised bed. It is just raised with some big rocks. It will be a path in the future. This year it is currently planted with 4 brussels sprouts and I think I may add some pansies as an underplanting.
This is bed #3 and will be mostly root crops with a bit of greens. It still needs to be built, filled and planted...but I do have a bunch of sieved soil and bagged leaf compost set aside for it so the root veggies will have deep soft soil.
The early spring plans also include potato bags...more on that later...
