Harvesting vegetables

My boyfriend claims that I’m the only person in the world to be excited about peas, but how could I not be since I grew them all from seed? My question is about harvesting them. I plan on freezing them immediately, can I just freeze them or do they need to be blanched before freezing [...]

Shifting Hybrid Teas

This time last year, I planted a Snow Queen bush. True to its name, it bore showy white blooms: This year it’s thriving and budding happily, which is good. But the new buds are all pink. I’m horribly confused. Is this common? There’s an Oklahoma planted a few feet away, but I don’t know that [...]

Mystery Bug?

Does anyone know what this critter might be? I found him hanging out in my seedlings and am not sure if he’s good to keep around or if I should relocate him to the rocks in the backyard. Thanks!

Old oil stains?

How do I go about getting an oil stain out that has had days to sit? I know the sweet’n’low trick when it’s fresh but I have no idea days after… any ideas? Thanks!

Helpful hint

Garden pictures this past week

Nasturtium blooming. First strawberries of the season. A baby Oak Treehopper sitting on the crook of my finger.

Baby tree cut in half

I’m freaking out. Somebody, presumably the neighbors (there’s nobody else who could even see it!) has snipped in half a baby Douglas Fir I planted last year in the back yard. It was leafing out beautifully with new growth and appeared to be surviving wonderfully. Now I found it lying right next to its stump with [...]

Shady spot, hostas, want some opinions

I have problems with light sensitivity (among other things) but I have been somewhat better this year (fingers firmly crossed) and for the first time in nearly a decade, I’m able to spend two or three hours outside in the morning and/or evening, or as long as I stick close to shady areas. In my [...]
