Painting Wooden Entertainment Center/Bookshelf

Painting Wooden Entertainment Center/Bookshelf

Hello! Just want to say, I love this comm, and love lurking.. I just never have advice to give, but I read read read!

Anyway, this might not be the best place to post this. I searched LJ for the interest furniture, to see if there is a DIY/Crafty/ furniture centric comm, but I couldn't find one. I saw comms for actual home remodeling and craft/diy ones for little crafts, but not furniture, so I decided to post here since I've been watching this comm and even if this isn't a regular question, I hope you guys can/will help =) (But if you know of another comm, or non-lj forum or website to help me, feel free to direct me there =))

This weekend I will be getting an old used, but really great wooden entertainment center/bookshelf. Supposedly it was originaly over a thousand bucks, and it is almost ten feet wide, with lots of shelves and cabinets. It is wood that is light colored.

I really want to edit it. (I don't even know the correct real life wording for this lol. I just edit graphics/pictures/art on the computer all the time for fun, so this is the best way I can say it)
I want to make it about me, repaint it, and anything else I can do.

I found this link http://www.ehow.com/how_121_paint-wood-furniture.html
I have printed it out and am going to go to a Home Depot and be like 'help me please!' to get all those materials. (I hope HD is the right store anyway ha) (know of a better store?)

I am pretty sure I want to paint it straight black. I don't know if I want it to look antique-y or glossy modern. I will see what paint I find at the store.

BUT, is there anything else you decorators and artsy people can recommend to me? What else can you do to a big wooden piece of furniture? I will see what the knobs on the cabinets look like, and if I see anything i love more at a store, I will try to replace them.

I am a dork, geek, whatever, so I am going to be filling my shelves with things like action figures, books, fantasy statues etc.

Do you guys think I should paint on some designs on the piece too? Or are there stickers of designs I can buy somewhere, or patterns? I also have a secret admiration of gothic style and decor, so I could paint on some old style flourishes on it maybe?

Anyway if you've made it this far- basically-
1. Do you know of any communities/forums/websites dedicated to painting/redecorating/editing furniture?
2. Do you have any straight forward furniture painting advice?
3. Do you have any artsy, decorative, design tips?

It's going to be used for our TV, our action figures, statues, random things
And I am into geeky-inspired and/or gothic inspired decor.

THANK YOU!
