Patio gardening: roses in containers? and more….
Does anyone have any advice on whether or not roses can be grown in containers, and if so what types and for how long? I only have deck space right now, but I am missing roses. I saw a rose on sale the other day, but chose to pass it up as I was unsure how well it would do in a container. Additionally it was a "tree" rather than a bush (there was a single cane, bare of branches up to about 3.5-4', and then a few canes branching off from there, with some new growth on the ends.) I would prefer a regular rosebush, or if it is to be found, some sort of climbing rose (as long as it won't totally take over in a short period of time...) Also wondering if a rose purchased and planted now would bloom, or if I'd have to wait until next year. Any input on this would be appreciated. Also, does anyone know anything about a butterfly bush? I got one about a week and a half ago, and then when I didn't water it for a whole day (okay, possibly two, but not longer than that) the whole thing dried up and appears to be dead. It wasn't dry that long (as it was WELL watered prior to that day or two) so I'm wondering if it will grow back if I keep it wet. Should I cut all the branches way down? Any other suggestions? Otherwise, my patio gardening is going well - all the flowering things I've planted are thriving and the two tomatoes I planted are growing like weeds and beginning to flower :D
