Perhaps they’ll make me happy this year.
This will be my hydrangeas third year. I bought them with blooms and they looked nice. Last summer they were green and lush but I got less than a flower a bush. This year I saw no buds-- none! I was sure they weren't going to flower. But it's been a weird, cold and wet season. They were just late. Most of the blooms are not gigantic but there are a lot more than one or two per bush. When the buds first showed up I thought the flowers would be white, a mild disappointment. But today they began opening up. They were the brightest purple I'd ever seen on a hydrangea in my area (Long Island, NY for those who wanna know). I had to take a picture. Once I took the picture I saw that the inside of the bloom had a stripe of the color I'm more familiar with. They've suprised me at every turn this year. Maybe I'll get a ten incher! Also surprising me, my son's mutant sunflower has three flowers growing on it. I always thought they had one gigantic flower on top but I never looked too closely because those things scare me.
