Personal Security?

I looked in the memories and didn't see anything on security. I am not really sure if its a "poor skill" or something meant for this community, but I was curious and wasn't sure if anyone can even help me... If this is not allowed, please delete.

I am currently living at home, but I am hoping to move soon to the city I was born. I used to live there with my mother in the worst part of town and before I moved back to where I am living now, I was assaulted by a drunk man. As far as I had heard, the crime rate has been going up dramatically and it was named one of the worst cities in Canada by Maclean's, a popular magazine in Canada. I am moving there to be closer to family, to go to school and because its cheap to live and I have no money.

I have no items that are of real value, most of my stuff just has sentimental value. Most of my furniture and the like are handed down or used, so I really don't care if someone were to take it, but I value myself. I know my family will help me and will be around a great deal of the time, but as a good example: my uncle went into a convenience store for a pack of smokes and my aunt stayed in the car. In the time between when he went in and came out, someone had attacked her (she mouthed off to a guy and he beat her up, especially in the face)...

Since I am going to be living alone and I walk everywhere, I was hoping for some suggestions for security. Preferably something cheap and effective for when I am alone, just in case something happens...

Edited:
Researching a little, I was kinda thinking of something like those personal Alarms: http://www.streetdefender.com/cgi-bin/catalog.pl?catalog=0 Has anyone tried something like this? I guess its supposed to draw attention to you and startle the attacker, but I was curious as to whether anyone has used one before? do they work at all?
