Plants Not Thriving

Plants Not Thriving

Hey there! I have a question about two of my plants in the garden, my peppermint, and my lovage. I have what probably seems like a bizarre predictament as far as the peppermint goes. It isn't really growing, and I'm wondering what's wrong. I know that peppermint likes to spread, and last year I figured it wasn't doing much because it was in its first year. But now its getting towards late summer in its second year, and it's still not doing much. I have a few plants of it that are moderately sized, and some smaller ones that have sprung up around it. Yet none of them are growing as big as the peppermint plants I've had in the past in a different garden. I've dedicated a whole section of a garden bed to the peppermint, in anticipation of its prolific growth. Yet its just sitting there, not appearing to grow or spread at all. Do I need to wait another year before this happens? I plan on harvesting it each fall, and drying it for tea throughout the year. Its the only thing that will help settle my stomache when I'm feeling naseaous, which happens sometimes for no apparent reason, so I like to always have some handy. I was hoping to grow and use my own though, instead of store bought herbal mint teas. I'm disappointed it isn't growing any better than this. I figured on pulling up any unwanted plants and drying them as it spread, so I wasn't worried about it taking over. However, it seems I had nothing to be concerned about anyway. Then there's my lovage. It's dying, and I don't know why. It didn't do well last year, and I thought it was the spot it was in, so I moved it over to a different spot this spring. Now it's dying. It's had plenty of water, since it's been raining so much this season, so I know that's not it. Maybe it's too crowded? I have a few stalks together, and I would divide them but they're really small, and haven't grown much at all. I thought you had to wait until they were fairly full sized before dividing them, and at this point I feel that dividing them would stress them too much. Anyone have any ideas on what could be happening to either of my plants? Any thoughts on how I can correct the problem(s)?
