Potatoes and Corn
A bit of a silly question, but what is the average yield of a potato plant? I know it varies based on a lot of factors, like disease, type of potato, fertility of soil, etc. but I'm just trying to get a guesstimate of how many plants I should plant. :) Also, we are converting part of what used to be a field corn field into a veggie garden. It's been field corn for a while, and the guy who sublets from us is coming today to plow it back up (He's going to plow the ground where my garden will be, too, so I'll be able to plant soon, too! Yeah!) They spread liquified cow manure and who knows what else on it a couple days ago. I've been told field corn can really suck the nutrients out of the ground, and someone told me to mulch with oak leaves. I wish I had done this, but since the new garden location was so up in the air until the last week or two, I haven't done anything but let the farmer spread that manure. Anybody else have any opinions on this? Should I add something else? Anything my soil is probably low on? I'm a completely novice gardener - when I lived in MN I grew flowers, and when I lived in NC nothing would grow in the sandy soil (our yard was literally sand held together by weeds!) but now I'm in lush NE Ohio, zone 6 or 7, depending on the map. :) Thanks for your help to this newbie!
