potting soil rescue

potting soil rescue

Hi Gardeners I am a container gardener in Massachusetts (zone 6) Last year I recharged/supplemented a container of old used potting soil by putting layers of kitchen scraps & newspaper between the layers of dirt. It worked well, and I got a good yield from that container. This year I decided to apply that experiment to all my containers. However, I ended up with an infestation of tiny flies in my containers. and earwigs! Also, powdery mildew really got to my tomatoes. (I think the constant rain of May & June was a factor) Replacing the soil this upcoming season is really out of my budget*. I'd like to figure out how to clean up, as much as possible, the existing soil. Does anybody have any ideas about, or experience with cleaning up potting soil for bugs and/or mold? *(I have 13 5-gallon containers, and 4 10-gallon containers, plus a number of other odd sized containers. ) thank you & Happy Harvest to all :)
