Probably not new news, but worth a try.
When you're shopping for meats, go early in the morning, or late at night. Aside: We used to wait until the grocery had bogo free weeks for their chicken, but the quality was awful and the meat was small in portion. We were never happy with our cooking results. Thus one day while in Sam's Club, we decided to try their 10 piece chicken breast packages (I know whole chickens are cheaper) and freeze some. The flavor of the chicken was so different! We found we'd eat less because we actually enjoyed more of the flavors we were eating. Back to point: This past Saturday we were in Sam's early in the morning and we saw that not only certain packages of the chicken, but also the 90% lean beef was on sale. Why? Because it was the day of the "freeze or use by" date. It was perfect for my husband and I because that's what we'd planned to do anyway. So we walked out of there with 10 chicken breasts, 6 pounds of ground beef, 4 sirloins, and 9 pork loins for $45. That's a lot of protein for our meals... for about $1.25 per person (not including leftovers). I swear we saved at least $10 on sale alone, not including the benefit of buying in baulk. I assume places also do the same types of deals at night when they wrap up stuff from the case that's been sitting in the case all day. But now I have a happy full freezer of meats and cheap ones at that too :-)
